Doritos Time Machine


Everyone knows that one of the reason to watch the super bowl is to watch the funny commercials. Now, there are always a few brands that consistently put up hilarious ads. One of my all-time favorite, is Doritos.

During the 2014 super bowl, Doritos ran its “Time Machine” ad. This ad features a man, Mr. Smith, eating Doritos, and he walks by an adorable, little boy with a cardboard box time machine. Mr. Smith decides to try out the time machine and in the process the little boy takes his Doritos and runs away.

So this commercial has all the elements to make it a great commercial. Funny old dude, an adorable little boy, a dog, and a time-machine. If that isn’t a recipe for greatness, I don’t know what is.

Seriously, this commercial makes an audience laugh and connect. Doritos is a bold snack that challenges you to do bold things. Would you try a cardboard time machine for a cute kid? I sure hope so.

Plot twist, the bold action isn’t trying out the time machine, it’s the tricky kid who takes the Doritos. This commercial was actually entered into a contest for the most creative commercial and it won one million dollars!

This commercial connects not only to the target audience, but it can also reach others outside of it. Think men and women between 20-45 who probably buy Doritos. You have the poor college students, the mom’s buying for their kids, and even the older men buying for their football parties.

This commercial sets the tone for this particular target audience. The poor college kid is thinking, “Hey, I want to try a time machine!”

The mom is thinking, “Awe, look at that little boy.”

The older man is thinking, “Ha, what an idiot, I would never stick my Doritos in that slot.”

Seriously, this commercial does bring in people and sets a playful tone. It also builds on Doritos foundation of snack boldly and be bold in the process. This commercial will make people remember Doritos and talk about the commercial with other people as well.

I don’t know about you guys, but I am totally craving Doritos after this commercial. Also everyone should highly consider building a cardboard time machine. I can’t wait to see what Doritos will do this year in the super bowl. Fingers crossed that another great commercial will come out again!
